COACH VERN TURNER - Head Coach - 7th Grade
Coach Vern Turner is the head coach of Chicago Select’s 7 th
grade boy’s basketball team. Coach Vern has more than 15
years of experience as a basketball coach and 5 years of
experience as a football coach. His experience includes
serving as the basketball coach for Providence St. Mel High
School for 7 years, and coaching grammar school basketball
and various boys AAU basketball teams for 8 years. Coach
Vern also coached the American Youth Football League
(AYF) for 5 years.
Coach Vern is a native of Chicago’s West Side, where he
attended Providence St. Mel High School. As a student at
Providence St. Mel, he was a twosport
athlete. He played
basketball for 4 years, as well as track and field. His high
school accomplishments include:
- 1st Team All Conference for 4 years
- Lead Chicago Prep Conference in assists & steals for 2 years.
- Member of the Class A IBCA All Star Team
- Class A IHSA All State Team
Coach Vern attended State Fair Missouri Junior College, where he was All Conference and led
the team in assists and steals. He was also the team captain for one year. After two successful
years at State Fair, he attended Culver Stockton College where he received his Bachelors
Degree in Criminal Justice. While on the basketball team at Culver, he was a member of the All
Conference Team and led the team in assists and steals. Coach Vern served as team captain
for 2 years.
In addition to coaching, Vern is a Certified Basketball Official. He has served as an official for
many Milwaukee Bucks scrimmage games, ProAm
tournaments in Chicago and Las Vegas,
and referees high school games throughout the city and suburbs. His officiating experience
includes the 2009 City Championship at UIC, the DePaul Holiday Tournament, the Martin
Luther King Holiday Tournament and the Junior Quarter Finals in 2008.
Coach Vern enjoys working with children. He is committed to teaching young athletes how to
play the game of basketball, and uses the sport to teach life skills for both on and off the court.
